Why I Jump at 60 (and Why You Might Want To)

Why I Jump at 60 (and Why You Might Want To)

We all have a “someday” list.

Maybe it’s something bold—like hiking to Everest basecamp or walking the Camino.
Or maybe it’s something quiet but personal, like being able to get up off the floor without using your hands.

The thing is, as we get older, it’s easy to start quietly crossing things off that list—not because we’ve done them, but because we’ve convinced ourselves it’s “too late.”

I know the feeling.
I’ve had a knee reconstruction.
I’ve had months where walking felt like enough of a challenge, never mind jumping.

But this week, as I pottered around in my studio, I caught myself jumping again. Not high. Not for long. But still—a jump.
And I realised something: at 60, I still jump.

On purpose.

And I want you to know why - and try it.

It’s Not About Being Impressive

As you can see from the video - it doesn't look polished. My balance still isn’t brilliant on my left leg, my knee is sore at the moment and my brain is always trying to protect it.

But here’s what jumping does represent:
Confidence
Agility
Coordination
A little rebellion against the idea that aging means giving up on certain moves

I don’t jump to prove anything.

I jump because I can—and because I worked SO hard to get that ability back.

And even if I'll leap over the pomell horse like they made us do at school -  the freedom of knowing I can still move in all directions matters more than ever.

Life Moves in Every Direction—So Should We

Most of our daily life isn’t straight lines.

We twist, we reach, we step sideways, we adjust quickly to stay upright on slippery ground or dodgy curbs. We pick up bags of compost and put them on our shoulders.

But if you watch many fitness instructors, everything they teach is face on. Forwards and back. Up and down.

What happens when to lift the shopping out of the oot of a car and put it down beside you.

Up, Down, right and left.

We need to train for those moves.

In the Midlife Movement Hub, we deliberately build in functional moves that get us going forward, backward, sideways—and yes, sometimes even off the ground.

Not because it looks flashy.
But because it makes everyday life easier.
And because stability, mobility and balance don’t just happen—we have to nurture them.

It’s Not About Perfection—It’s About Possibility

I’m not jumping like a 20-year-old.
I’m not aiming for perfection.
I’m just moving in ways that keep my body confident and capable—especially on uneven, unpredictable ground.

Whether you’ve had an injury, feel a bit wobbly lately, or have just drifted away from movement, this is your reminder:
You’re allowed to come back.
You’re allowed to start again.
And you’re allowed to move differently than you did before.

So… What’s on Your “Someday” List?

Is there something you’ve quietly put aside because you assumed you were too old or too injured or too out of practice?

Like discovering a Greek island on a little moped - SO scary for me, but I'm glad I did it!

What would happen if, instead of crossing it off, you circled it and thought,

“…not yet. But maybe soon.”

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

The Midlife Movement Hub is here for all of that.
It’s open all year round, with live and recorded classes you can do in your own time.
You’ll find strength, balance, coordination and fun in movements that are built for midlife bodies—not punishing them, but supporting them.

It’s not about jumping high.
It’s about jumping back in—on your terms.

You in?
